He commenced his educational path with medical studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from 1987 to 1993. Along the way, he achieved notable milestones, including State Examinations and United States Medical Licensing Examination Steps 1 and 2, which demonstrated his commitment to excellence. Further enriching his academic background, Prof. Dr. Hillenkamp pursued a part-time Master's program in Hospital Management from 2007 to 2009, in collaboration with the Medical Faculty of Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel and Akademie Damp GmbH.

From 1997 to 2000, he served as an assistant physician and research associate at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Düsseldorf. This was followed by a research fellowship from the German Research Foundation at The Rayne Institute, St. Thomas' Hospital, and a Medical Retina Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, United Kingdom, from 2000 to 2002.

🔹His career path then led him to the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Regensburg, where he served as an assistant physician and research associate from 2002 to 2004. It was in this year that he attained the prestigious title of Specialist in Ophthalmology and Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO). Prof. Dr. Hillenkamp continued to climb the ranks in the field of ophthalmology, serving as a senior physician at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Regensburg, from 2004 to 2007.
