Univ.-Prof. Dr. Florin-Andrei Taran

Oncology (Head of the Department of Gynecology and Gynecological Oncology)

Rating: 9.9/10 (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)
Department: Gynecology and Gynecological Oncology
Hospital: University Hospital Köln

🔹Prof. Taran studied at the Ruprecht-Karls University of Heidelberg and received a doctorate there. After a postdoctoral research fellowship at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, he then habilitated in 2012 at the Eberhard-Karls University in Tübingen. After leadership roles in Tübingen and Zurich, he moved to Freiburg, where he was Deputy Medical Director of the Department of Gynecology since 2021.

🔹His clinical research interests primarily lie in the field of robot-assisted oncological surgery, which is a pioneering surgical method merging minimally invasive precision and advanced technology. “One of the biggest innovations in recent years are so-called surgical robots. “My goal is to further develop the Department of Gynecology into a constituent part of the Center for Robotics of the University Hospital Cologne,” says Prof. Taran. He is also co-initiated the German Curriculum for Robotic Surgery in Gynecology.

🔹He has delivered a multitude of pioneering studies in translational research in gynecological oncology and senology. In combination with his teams, he has researched how biomechanical properties of the tumor microenvironment, and most particularly the stiffness of the basement membrane, might correlate with risk of metastasis. “Our goal is to utilize the diagnostic function of basement membrane mechanics to classify breast and ovarian cancer patients into high- and low-risk metastatic cohorts. From this we plan to establish patient specific treatment protocols. We anticipate rolling out this approach together across the Center for Integrated Oncology and extending it into different solid tumors.”

🔹Along with clinical work and research, Prof. Taran is passionate about academic teaching. “Teaching is integral to being a university professor. Aiming for an optimisation of the concept of teaching, training and continuing education with a focus on the model medical curriculum of the faculty“Prof. Taran. He hopes to give interested students chances to get involved in small research projects and learn the basics of scientific work. Later these projects can be developed into doctoral dissertations. “I plan to establish the ‘Doctoral Colloquium on Women’s Health’ so as to facilitate an effective and successful paradigm of doctoral projects,” he adds.
