What is Volvulus?
Volvulus is a serious medical condition where a part of the intestine twists around itself and the mesentery (the tissue that supports the intestine).
This twisting can block the flow of digestive contents, leading to severe complications. Volvulus can occur in various parts of the digestive tract, but it most commonly affects the colon (colonic volvulus) or the small intestine (intestinal volvulus).
This condition can cause intense abdominal pain, bloating, and, if not treated promptly, can lead to tissue death and other severe health issues.

- Endoscopy: In some cases, a flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) may be used to visualize the inside of the digestive tract.
Potential Treatment of Volvulus
Treatment for volvulus depends on the severity and the location of the twist. It generally includes:
- Emergency Surgery: Most cases require surgical intervention to untwist the affected segment of the intestine and potentially remove any damaged tissue. This procedure is often performed as an emergency due to the risk of complications.
- Endoscopic Decompression: In some instances, especially if diagnosed early, a gastroenterologist may use an endoscope to relieve the obstruction without surgery.
- Supportive Care: Treatment may include intravenous fluids, pain management, and antibiotics if there is an infection.
