🔹Professor Dr. Christian Hagl (born in 1967) assumed the leadership of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery and Polyclinic at the Ludwig Maximilian University's Hospital on October 1, 2011. The previous head of the department, Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Bruno Reichart, retired as Director and Ordinarius upon reaching the retirement age of 68.
🔹More than 3,000 surgical procedures are performed annually at both locations on the Großhadern campus and the Augustinum Heart Center. Christian Hagl, born in Munich and raised on Lake Starnberg as the son of a surgeon, completed his medical studies and earned his doctorate at the University of Heidelberg.
🔹His clinical training in heart and vascular surgery began in 1995 at the University Hospital in Kiel. Just a year later, he joined the Medical School in Hannover (MHH) under the guidance of Professor Haverich, where he furthered his specialization in one of Europe's largest transplantation centers. After returning from a two-year research stay at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, he completed his habilitation at MHH.
🔹In 2004, he became a senior physician, and since January 2009, he was the Senior Senior Physician in the Department of Heart, Thoracic, Transplant, and Vascular Surgery at MHH, earning the title of Associate Professor in 2010. From 2006 to 2008, as a board member of the German Society for Heart, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery, he focused particularly on the structured training of surgical juniors.
🔹Prof. Hagl is a member of numerous scientific societies and commissions, and he serves as a scientific reviewer on the editorial board of the "Journal of Heart, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery." The new head of the department has been able to attract a team of employees who will strengthen the successful LMU Cardiovascular Surgery team in various specialties.
🔹With the new appointment, the entire spectrum of modern cardiac surgery, including minimally invasive procedures, will be continued and further developed. Professor Hagl has clinical expertise and a nationally and internationally respected high scientific reputation in the treatment of diseases of the aorta, which includes the establishment of new surgical techniques and the protection of various organ systems during these often very complex procedures.
🔹Other focuses include reconstructive procedures on heart valves, special techniques for complete arterial revascularization of the coronary arteries, and the surgical treatment of terminal cardiac and pulmonary insufficiency. Prof. Hagl states, "With the increasing life expectancy of our patients, modern medicine will continue to present new challenges.
