🔹As a gastroenterological and hepatological center of maximum care, Prof. Schmidt's clinic covers the entire spectrum of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
🔹In the endoscopic department of the University Hospital Essen, all diagnostic, endoscopic, interventional endoscopic, and sonographic (ultrasound) techniques are employed, with more than 10,000 examinations conducted annually.
🔹The outpatient department of the division, led by gastroenterology expert Prof. Schmidt, not only manages general gastroenterology appointments but also offers specialized clinics for liver and biliary tract diseases, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, functional gastrointestinal disorders, pancreatic diseases, and gastroenterological tumors, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma.
🔹A significant portion of the patients under the care of this expert in gastroenterology and hepatology are referred from hospitals or private practitioners outside the Essen metropolitan area. Recently, an increasing number of patients with advanced liver diseases, including acute and chronic liver failure, have been referred for further evaluation with regard to liver transplantation.
🔹Prof. Dr. Hartmut Schmidt, born in Kirchweyhe, Lower Saxony, completed his medical studies in Hannover and at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, USA. In 1988, he commenced his clinical career at the Hannover Medical School in the Department of Gastroenterology and undertook a two-year research stay at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, supported by a scholarship from the German Research Foundation.
🔹Prof. Dr. Hartmut Schmidt holds the specialization in Internal Medicine, as well as further qualifications in Gastroenterology, Rescue Medicine, and Nutritional Medicine. From 1999 to 2005, he worked as a Senior Physician and, eventually, as the Senior Senior Physician at the Berlin Charité in the Medical Clinic for Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Endocrinology.
🔹In 2005, he accepted a professorship in Experimental Transplant Hepatology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Münster and later led a section in Clinical Transplant Hepatology. In 2010, he established a clinic for Transplant Medicine with a focus on hepatology in Münster. Starting in 2017, he served as the Director of Medical Clinic B, specializing in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endocrinology, and Clinical Infectious Diseases. For his scientific contributions, he received awards such as the Prevention Prize from the German Society of Internal Medicine in 1996 and 2001, the Ludolph-Brauer Prize from the Northwest German Society of Internal Medicine in 1998, and the Research Prize for Transplantation from the German Transplantation Society in 1998.
🔹As of May 1, 2021, Prof. Dr. Hartmut Schmidt assumed the Chair of Internal Medicine with a focus on Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen, along with the role of Director of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Transplant Medicine at the University Medicine Essen.
