🔹Surgery, Prof. Dr. Mario Perl, The diversity of work and the impressive dedication of the staff at the University Hospital Erlangen, along with the high national and international reputation of the FAU, have excited Prof. Perl for his new position.
🔹The University Hospital Erlangen offers the opportunity to organize and implement diagnostic and therapeutic concepts in trauma surgery and orthopedics in an interdisciplinary and multiprofessional manner due to its extensive range of services. At the same time, it allows for the development of specialized disciplines at the highest level with excellent accompanying research," says Prof. Perl.
🔹His goal is to establish a nationally leading center for trauma surgery and orthopedics in Erlangen in the coming years. "I would like to gradually further develop the core sections of Acute and Sports Traumatology, Spinal Surgery, Geriatric Traumatology, and Endoprosthetics, and strengthen the occupational accident and disease rehabilitation process on-site," says Prof. Perl.
🔹The broad field of orthopedics and trauma surgery requires an organizational structure with strong self-responsible sections. Close cooperation with statutory accident insurance providers, regional hospitals, and also with specialist physicians in private practice is important to the clinic director. One of the main tasks of the Erlangen Trauma Surgery department is to provide care for severely injured patients from the Nuremberg metropolitan region.
🔹Furthermore, through its own university outpatient clinic, patients are treated in specialized clinics for sports orthopedics/sports traumatology, occupational accidents, spine, shoulder, elbow, pelvis, hip, knee, foot, and endoprosthetics. Additionally, there is a specialized clinic for children. Another focus of trauma surgery is the care of elite athletes. In 2002, Prof. Perl completed his medical studies after multiple stays abroad at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, and the University of Ulm.
🔹He then completed his specialist training in orthopedics and trauma surgery under Prof. Dr. Lothar Kinzl in Ulm. Prof. Perl was significantly influenced by his two-year research stay at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, USA.
🔹In 2013, he joined the Berufsgenossenschaftliche Unfallklinik Murnau under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Volker Bühren, which is one of the largest trauma centers in Europe and provides pioneering patient care in areas such as spine and pelvic surgery and polytrauma. There, Prof. Perl worked as the head of the research department for trauma immunology and as the chief senior physician from 2015 until his move to Erlangen.
🔹In addition to other commitments, Prof. Perl is involved in the German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU), the German Society for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU), and the AO Foundation.
