🔹The Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at Goethe University Frankfurt/Main has early on made the surgical treatment of cataracts, known as the "Gray Star," his main focus. Cataracts, a clouding of the lens that typically occurs in advanced age, are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. In developed countries, vision can generally be preserved by removing the clouded lens in a routine procedure and replacing it with an artificial lens.
🔹Prof. Kohnen initially studied medicine in Aachen and later in Bonn and Minneapolis (USA). He began exploring potential complications of cataract surgery during his doctoral studies in 1989. After serving as a senior physician at the Bundeswehr Hospital Ulm and the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Frankfurt/Main, as well as a research stay at the Cullen Eye Institute of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston (USA), he completed his habilitation in 2000.
🔹In 2003, Prof. Kohnen assumed a C3 professorship at the University Eye Clinic Frankfurt. Starting in 2003, he also served as the deputy director, and since 2012, he has been the director of the clinic. His primary clinical focus remains cataract surgery. In 2015, Prof. Kohnen performed the world's first implantation of an artificial lens with four focal points. "With these and other premium lenses, many patients can completely do without glasses after the operation," he says.
🔹His other areas of expertise include refractive and corneal surgery, as well as glaucoma surgery. In addition to his medical practice, Prof. Kohnen completed a study in health economics at the International University Schloss Reichartshausen in 2006/07. He is also an editor of several professional journals and has received numerous awards, including the Leohnard-Klein Prize from the DOG and the Gold Medal Lecture from the AUSCRS. In 2008, he was appointed as a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmologists.
