🔹His research significantly contributed to the improvement of medical diagnostics for pathological tissues and organs through imaging techniques. This includes methods based on magnetic fields, such as magnetic resonance imaging, as well as a newly developed ultrasound-based technique known as elastography for gentle tumor diagnostics.

🔹In the development of elastography, he applied the well-established knowledge that healthy tissue reacts differently to slight pressure than pathologically altered tissue. Hamm adapted this insight to his radiological examinations of tumor tissues using ultrasound and demonstrated that solid, denser tumor tissue produces different images in elastography under slight pressure from the ultrasound probe compared to softer and finer healthy tissue. Prof. Dr. Bernd Hamm developed an elegant method to distinguish tumor tissue more reliably from healthy tissue.

🔹Another breakthrough in applied research was achieved by Prof. Dr. Bernd Hamm in the treatment of narrowed arteries that, undesirably, re-close after previous surgical widening, known as restenosis. To keep blood vessels permanently open, Prof. Dr. Bernd Hamm developed a special balloon catheter coated with an active substance derived from the bark of the Pacific yew tree. The substance, known as Paclitaxel, inhibits cell division and was primarily used for cancer treatment up to that point.
