🔹Prof. Dr. med. Uwe Mehlhorn's illustrious career in the field of cardiac surgery is marked by numerous achievements. He commenced his journey as a postgraduate and research associate at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, University of Cologne from January 1991 to June 1993.
🔹During this time, he conducted groundbreaking research leading to his Doctoral Thesis in October 1992. This thesis delved into the colloid-osmotic pressure and extravascular fluid in lungs post-surgery with a coronary artery approach, utilizing colloidal or crystalloid coatings of the heart-lung apparatus. In July 1993, Prof. Mehlhorn embarked on a Fellowship of the German Scientific and Research Association at the University of Texas – Houston Medical School, which extended until July 1995.
🔹He furthered his research as a Research Fellow at the Center for microvascular and lymphatic research at the UT - Houston Medical School from July 1995 to December 1995, sponsored by UT. In January 1996, he continued his journey as a Resident at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Cologne, eventually becoming a Staff Surgeon in August 1998.
🔹In January 1999, he completed his PhD Thesis on continuous coronary perfusion with normothermic blood and β-blocking with esmolol for myocardium defense during surgery with a coronary approach, which encompassed experimental studies and clinical applications. In June 1999, he took on the role of Vice-Chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cologne University.
🔹In April 2001, he reached another milestone by becoming a University Professor (C3) for Cardiac Surgery at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, University of Cologne. His contributions to the field were further acknowledged with various appointments, including becoming a Member of the board of the German Society of Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery in February 2003 and a Member of the "Program committee of European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS)" in November 2004.
🔹In February 2005, he assumed the position of Vice-chairman of the working committee "Extracorporal circulation mechanical circulatory support" of the German Society of Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades and honors, including the title of Doctor Honoris Causa (Dr. h.c.) from Rostov-on-Don State Medical University in Russia in May 2005.
🔹He was also recognized as an Officer of the Michael E. DeBakey Institute for Comparative Cardiovascular Science and Biomedical Devices of Texas University in November 2005. Prof. Dr. med. Uwe Mehlhorn's commitment to international collaboration led him to be a participant of the "Commission for international affairs" of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) in January 2006.
🔹He later served as the Secretary of the "Commission for new staff training, further education, and advanced training" of the German Society of Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery in March 2006. His dedication to advanced training in specific cardiosurgical intensive therapy was acknowledged in August 2006. In May 2007, he was honored as an Honorary member of the Russian Surgical Society.

Uwe Mehlhorn continued to make significant contributions in the field as a Staff Surgeon at the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, University of Mainz, from June 2007 to March 2011, and later as Vice-Chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, University of Mainz, from March 2011 to February 2015.
