Sankt Katharinen-Krankenhaus

Frankfurt am Main

In the spring of 1960, the previous Waldkrankenhaus in Bad Rothenfelde, along with all its inventory, 120 employees, and 80 religious’ sisters, relocated to Frankfurt, described in the daily press as one of the most extensive moves in Germany. On May 30, 1960, the new Sankt Katharinen Hospital opened its doors. It included 454 beds, of which 55 were for infectious patients. The specialized departments included internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, neurology, radiology, and laboratory services. The hospital also had departments for urology, maxillofacial surgery, ENT (ear, nose, and throat), and ophthalmology.

The hospital underwent extensive expansions, establishing an intensive care unit in 1970 with 11 beds, an emergency room in 1983, and an expansion for laboratory medicine and Internal medicine cardiology.

In 1996, the cafeteria in the newly built glass pyramid was put into operation.

Due to the legislative reorganization of the regional bed plan, the hospital lost its gynecological department in 1999 but gained a new main department, urology, with 50 beds. The other specialized departments were also discontinued.

In June 2002, a generously equipped physical therapy department opened its doors. In the same year, the construction of an acute medical unit consisting of a central operating room, emergency outpatient department, and an intensive care unit with 12 beds began, funded by state resources. This was completed in early summer 2004 and was designed by the architectural firm Wörner + Partner. At the same time, a new infection building was constructed, comprising 30 beds, which was occupied in early 2004.

In August 2003, a monitoring and admissions station with an interdisciplinary intermediate care unit was commissioned.

In the spring of 2005, the first inpatient hospice in Frankfurt was opened within the hospital premises. It is operated in joint sponsorship with a foundation.

Since 1993, the Sankt Katharinen Hospital has been part of the Society of the Katharinen Sisters, a coalition of social institutions of the Katharinen Sisters in Germany. Since 1996, there has been a friends' circle of the Sankt Katharinen Hospital, dedicated to promoting the hospital's cause
